During Chinese New Year

Dried meat Malaysia. Best bak kwa – Chinese BBQ meat jerky. There used to be a time when people eat bak kwa (Chinese style BBQ pork jerky/ also known as Yok Korn in Cantonese) only during Chinese New Year.

Bak kwa was also popular as gifts. Today, people eat bak kwa (BBQ dried meat), bak chang (glutinous rice dumpling) and even glutinous rice balls in syrup whole year. These “traditional” items have evolved to be daily treats, no more exclusive to certain times of the year or during festivals.

DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur. Chinese New Year is a time for family reunions and gatherings.

The Reunion Dinner is the most important meal and the tradition signifies family values of love, respect and bond. Food plays an important role due to their symbolic meanings of luck and auspiciousness. Dumplings represent wealth as it is shaped like a Chinese gold ingot, the round shape of glutinous rice balls symbolise completeness and reunion, while noodles are all about longevity and smoothness.

Baby's Full Month Cakes

Baby's Full Month Cakes from The Pine Garden. The Dim Sum Box Set from The Pine Garden is a delightful throwback to more traditional times, comprising glutinous rice, red eggs and ang ku kueh (for girls) or ang yi (for boys) packed in a round bamboo steamer.

For a modern touch, BFM04 replaces glutinous rice with mini cupcakes, presented in baby blue or pink gift boxes.

Celebrate Chinese New Year

THIRTY8 at Grand Hyatt Hotel Elegant and polished, THIRTY8 at Grand Hyatt Hotel is definitely one of the best restaurants in Kuala Lumpur to celebrate Chinese New Year in style. Its festive menu is inclusive of a salmon Yee Sang (RM228++ per person) or abalone (RM288++) Yee Sang platter, soup for appetiser and glutinous rice flour cake for dessert while main courses consist of double-boiled chicken soup, steamed garoupa fillet, braised dried oyster, deep-fried crispy chicken, and fried rice wrapped in lotus leaf.

Perfectly catering to small families, this Chinese New Year offer only requires a minimum of four diners, and those who dine at THIRTY8 on 19 February can enjoy an exciting acrobatic lion dance performance on steep poles at the hotel's main entrance.

No Added Artificial Preservatives

Dollee Kaya (Coconut Spread) is exactly like how Ma Ma use to make it. All natural, it is made from Coconut Milk, Sugar and Pandan (Screwpine Leaves). There is absolutely no added artificial preservatives, flavouring or colouring. Dollee also does not cut corners and there is no added flour unlike some commercial versions of this sweet treat. Dollee Traditional Kaya is a more nostalgic flavour and has stronger hints of Caramel.

Dollee Pandan Kaya is a more modern version with a stronger aroma of the fragrant Pandan leaf. Contains Eggs. Gluten Free. Enjoy Dollee Kaya as a spread (like a jam) on bread, toast, pancakes, waffles and cakes. It is also delicious when used as a filling for buns, pau (steamed buns), sweet glutinous rice dumplings, kuih or other sweet desserts.

Lower Ground Floor

My girlfriend introduced to me Jonker Sweets Dessert stall some time ago and I have been hooked since. The stall is located at Lower Ground floor Gardens Mall. It has my all time favorite tong sui - black glutinous rice or hak lo mai.

They also have a variety of other tong sui, ice kacang and fruit lolo (ice shavings topped with fresh fruits and sago). Tong sui is priced at MYR 3.30 a bowl. Fruit lolo starts from MYR 6.50 onwards and they have a few varieties to choose from. I would say that the price is decent for the serving size and in a shopping mall.

It was slightly ‘spicy' for my liking, but definitely a nice tummy warmer on a cold rainy day.

Glutinous Rice Ball

Fook Yuen – Best Glutinous Rice Ball at Fortress Hill, Hong Kong. The rice ball is the same, the only difference is they will throw in a packet of pre-packed peanut mix.

Their grinded peanut has both fine and coarse texture with very fine sugar. The unique thing is they added coconut shavings to enhance the fragrance. I asked for three peanut and two sesame rice balls and i totally enjoyed the peanut fillings as much as the sesame.
