For those who feel bathing the spongy rice rolls with prawn gravy is mundane or isn't cutting-edge enough, make your way to this unassuming restaurant. Among the most vaunted version is drowning the chee cheong fun with curry, which is mildly spicy yet savoury. Yam Cake and Pig Skin Curry. Teh Ais with Gula Melaka.

Melaka Food. Nyonya Kuih. My favorite Nyonya Kuih is Ondeh-ondeh (or onde-onde). It is either made from sweet potato or glutinous rice flour.

The cute little ondeh-ondeh are infused with pandan (screwpine leaf) juice and filled with Gula Melaka (local sugar) or palm sugar and then rolled in with some fresh grated coconut. The palm sugar that's in it literally bursts in your mouth when you take a bite. This warm dessert oozes into your mouth. For takeaway, drive over to Baba Charlie Nyonya Cakes located in a residential area which is frequented by locals.

Our last stop before leaving Melaka is at this famous putu piring stall at Jalan Tengkera. I wouldn't miss it for nothing after reading all the rave reviews about this putu piring. It's a long time coming but not as long as Nadeje's mille crepe. Hehe What's a putu piring?

It's a steamed rice flour cake with gula melaka filling in the shape of a plate (piring). The putu piring is usually placed on a banana leaf with lightly salted young grated coconut between them. As soon as the aunty saw my mom and me coming towards them, she fired up the steamer to reheat the putu piring. There were no queue or other customer – one of the pro of visiting Melaka on a working day.
