Chinese New Year

Wat to eat on Chinese New Year 2017. Teochew steam fish.

This is regarded as one of the leading Teochew restaurants in Singapore. Start the new year on a sweet note with some Teochew Oh Nee (yam paste dessert)! See Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine.

So big plate RM 8. Eat before other place so small plate. The pork intestine very thick, so nice to bite. Meanwhile also order pork ear or they call fournieri brilliant idea cut thin slices, never see before. Easy to eat and crunchy. Cook with mala hot sauce. Very spicy so tasty.

Something Different

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendol. The Chendol stall which tourists throng to day in day out. Don't be confused as there is a competitor selling the exact same stuff directly opposite.

Just observe which stall attracts more customers. If you come during peak hour, there'll be queues but in our case there was practically no one. Penang Road Teochew Chendol also serves up a mean bowl of Ice Kachang if you crave something different.

Huge Variety

Joo Seng Teochew Porridge & Rice. This is my go-to place for Teochew porridge fix – just 5 mins drive away from Bukit Timah.

The braised duck meat and boiled squid are particularly good and very consistent in quality. A huge variety of dishes including a few non Teochew delights greet visitors – indeed it is somewhat akin to an “economical rice” stall. Address: 14 Cheong Chin Nam Road, Singapore 599738 Operating hours: 10am – 4am (Daily)

East Coast

For fans of Teck Teochew Porridge, please note that the stall has once again shifted to East Coast Road and is now operating as “Joo Chiat Teochew Porridge, Singapore”. This stall is a mix of Teochew porridge and zi char, with fishes being displayed out front.

Menu items are quite limited with only the braised stuff being standard, and you will need to ask the uncle what they have since it's like a zi char but with no menu. The advantage is that many of items will be made fresh behind the kitchen like the stir-fried cabbage. Remember to order the signature braised pork trotters as well.

Sweet Tooth

Penang Road Teochew Chendol ice Kachang at Lebuh Keng Kwee off Penang Road. The chendol here (2.20RM) is less sweet than the one at Jalan Macalister but more creamier. Besides that, it's hard to differentiate the two.

Personally, I prefer the Jalan Macalister chendol. I've really got a sweet tooth indeed. Chow on the other hand prefers the Penang Road version.
