This small kopitiam (coffee shop) is located in a housing area in Kubang Buaya, right next to the Kuantan Specialist Hospital. A favourite local joint, it is packed during breakfast and the star of the show is their homemade Nasi Lemak— with various choices of side dishes like curry chicken, fried chicken, squid, prawns and vegetables.Location: Lorong Kubang Buaya 21, off Jalan Kubang Buaya, Kuantan.

Yong Tau Fu

rif and I stumbled across the curry mee stall at Kedai Kopi Ah Soon by accident. This stall serves something similar to what Jess Café is serving – yong tau fu with curry noodles.

While the curry mee was just alright in my opinion, it was the yong tau fu that stole the show. The nasi lemak stall is also popular here but we didn't get to try this as they were sold out. Kedai Kopi Ah Soon (non-halal) Lorong Kubang Buaya 21, off Jalan Kubang Buaya, Kuantan

Alor Akar Seafood

You can't go to Kuantan and not have at least one seafood meal! There are tons of really good seafood restaurants in Kuantan, but the most popular place (where everyone seems to go to) is Alor Akar Seafood.

Location: Lot 7695 & 7696, Jalan Kubang Buaya, Kuantan. Operating Hours: 6pm-12am, daily.

Zen Korean BBQ. Besides its grilled pork, its dolsot bibimbap and bulgogi soup served with rice are already worth a trip here.

The soup is aromatic and unctuous, and the beef tender and succulent. Accompanying are house-made side dishes like kimchi, egg roll, and stewed lotus root slices. Since it tends to be flooded with hungry customers at mealtimes, it's best to get there early.

The range is right next to the Adelaide Zoo and you shoot arrows while being serenaded by monkeys and lions, which adds a certain primal appeal to the whole process.

Loved Chinese New Year Snack

Chinese Pork Jerky or bak kwa (Chinese dialect Hokkien), also known as rougan (Mandarin) is a famous customary and much loved Chinese New Year snack in Malaysia and Singapore. Bak kwa and rougan simply means “dry meat” akin to jerky.

It is smoky, aromatic and savoury and deemed to be the favourite local snack throughout the year in both Malaysia and Singapore. During Chinese New Year celebrations, you will find an extensive line up of people outside many popular bak kwa specialty shops despite the hefty price tag.
