I wait for 75% off sales on good quality sheets, then use them for years and years. I don't aim for high thread count sheets (as other have said the higher thread counts sheets have finer threads, rather than more threads), but it does seem that I bought a 1000TC set the last time around.

I would look for heavy high thread count sheets at a major department store and see what they have on clearance. You may find something good if you aren't too picky about the color.
