Not knowing what to expect we arrived to find a beautifully set, breezy open-air dining area. Kids were delighted to find little treats by their plates and adults equally delighted by every moment they spent doodling and doing origami. We were served a true British Christmas spread with a plentiful supply of smoked turkey and all the necessary trimmings.

A perfect escape from the Kuala Lumpur, Janda Baik is nestled in a green rain forest where you can unwind and enjoy the fresh air whilst enjoying a lazy, clear water cruise. Go to A Little Farm on the Hill to show your little ones how their food is grown this 7 acre farm. The kids will love running around the farm.

We've eaten our share of festive buffets in fancy KL city hotels and where they can offer a mind-boggling variety and chocolate fountains, they cannot compete with eating while watching the clouds move by, kids build bridges with sticks or toddlers adoring a friendly dog.

Before fully launching into this new year, let me share some moments from A Little Farm on the Hill, where we spent a wonderful Christmas Day. This place truly is a hidden gem in Janda Baik.

It's only an hour's drive from the city, but all you hear is birds chirping amongst the neat lines of vegetable patches and fruit trees. We signed up for the one-off lunch on the spur of a moment after seeing it advertised somewhere in social media – luckily, since the tables sold out almost immediately.

A distinctly Western slant can be seen in the dak galbi taco (RM19.90) which provides a completely satisfying meal. Gochujang marinated (fermented red chilli paste) chicken strips, grilled tender and juicy, are wrapped tightly in a roll with crunchy greens. In place of coffee, try the snow flower sik hae tea (a rice drink akin to barley, RM9.90).

The 20 minute nature trail around the estate was great fun for our nature-deprived youngsters. The price they had to pay for exploring a small waterfall and a river was a few leeches, but the novelty of the bloodsuckers was greater than the pain for most.
