The railway environment is a dangerous one but when a building is constructed next to a live railway with overhead power lines, the safety of passengers and site operatives is paramount. Built next to Helsinki's main train station, KPMG's new headquarters required a range of innovative solutions that would provide both edge protection and fall safety for workers and pedestrians below.

To meet these challenges leading collective protection specialist COMBISAFE provided their Safety Net Fans and Steel Mesh Barrier edge protection system.

Project Roche Tower. For the construction of the concrete framed building, the contractors will employ a self-climbing formwork system that allows the walls and floor slabs to be cast in one operation in a daily cycle.

Forming part of the largest infrastructure project in Holland, the construction of a second Holland Bridge across the Ijmeer Channel will widen the A6 motorway to four lanes in each direction and led to the specification Steel Mesh Barrier Edge Protection System. During the construction of the 300 metre long bridge, civil engineers VolkerWessels installed 700 LM of Steel Mesh Barriers along each side of the extensive concrete deck and steel works using the Adjustable Safety Posts and the Shuttering Attachment.

The COMBISAFE engineering team worked with the client at the earliest stage of the construction process to ensure the most appropriate, safe and cost-effective protection system was used during the construction­­ of this precast concrete frame building. Steel Wire Mesh Barrier is temporary, portable, and easy to install and load, can use many times. The 2600mm x 11500mm galvanised welded mesh panel are manufactured from 5mmand 8mm steel wire with centres not exceeding 300mm, complying with EN Standard.

The RHS post can be fixed to concrete using the low profile 152mm square fixing flange. Use masonry bolts or similar fixings – however we suggest gathering engineering advice before fixing to concrete. Alternatively, for soft sandy ground or asphalt paved areas, steel fence posts or star pickets can be used.

It is a flexible product with a choice of installation options to suit either concrete or soft, sandy ground. Each galvanised welded mesh panel comprises 4mm steel wire construction. The wire grid has centres not exceeding 50mm x 50mm, meaning it complies with AS/NZS 4576-1995 ‘Guidelines for Scaffolding'.
