Careful Canopy Management Needed Ensure

2017 Cleefs Reserve Collection Chardonnay. 2017 surprised us all. After an early, dry and warm start to the growing season the weather turned around with moderate days and cool evenings.

Exactly what we wanted for the ripening period. The grapes came from 3 blocks in Stellenbosch and a single block in Robertson. Careful canopy management was needed to ensure enough growth to ripen bunches. The canopy was tipped early in the season to initiate side shoot growth to protect the bunches against sun burn.

2018 VS Chardonnay. After 3 years of drought these vineyards looked amazing and in balance. The grapes came from 3 blocks in Stellenbosch and a single block in Robertson.

All the Stellenbosch blocks are dryland whilst Robertson only received one small drip irrigation. Careful canopy management was needed to ensure enough growth to ripen bunches. The canopy was tipped early in the season to initiate side shoot growth to protect the bunches against sun burn. The grape were handpicked early in the morning.

Deep Red Soils

2018 Foot Of Africa Chenin Blanc Reserve. The grapes were harvested from low yield-bearing bush and trellised vineyards from Stellenbosch, Paarl and Breedekloof Valley.

These vineyards are situated on predominately southwestern facing slopes. A combination of sand and deep red soils with good water retention led to good root development, supplying the vines with optimum moisture during the summer ripening period and 3 year drought. Yields averaged between 10 to 15 tons per hectare.

Had Good

2015 Shiraz. Most of the fruit for this wine was sourced from our own vineyards with a few selected parcels from other Stellenbosch vineyards.

The relatively wet winter season meant that no supplementary irrigation was needed and a good balance of fruit concentration and elegance was achieved with very little intervention. Moderate day-time and cool night-time temperatures during the ripening period meant that we had very good flavour development in the fruit prior harvest.

Cleefs Classic Collection

2018 Cleefs Classic Collection Chenin Blanc. The grapes for this wine comes from selected vineyards in Stellenbosch and Paarl.

Owing to the nature of bush vines, careful canopy management was exercised so that no bunches were exposed to excessive sunlight and an even ripening of the grapes. A dry winter combined with an early spring led to an early bud break and thus early start to the growing season. The 2018 summer started very warm, but became a moderate to cool vintage with very cool evenings.

Cleefs Classic Collection

2018 Cleefs Classic Collection Chardonnay. The 2017 winter was yet another dry one worsening the current drought in the Western Cape. There was early bud break with a moderate summer.

There was a couple of “natural irrigation” (rain) during the growing period that kept the vines healthy and slowed the ripening. Harvest was 2 weeks later than 2017. The higher altitude Stellenbosch vineyards that face False Bay contributed texture and fruit, while the Robertson vineyards generally contributed more minerality owing to the limestone based soils.
