A mattress protector is a good start. Then a fitted sheet set that comes with a fitted bottom sheet, flat top sheet and generally 2 pillow cases. I like a cotton weave type blanket for summer and then a doona (which is only for show in summer...). I would recommend going up a size in doona and doona cover; e.g.

kingsize doona for a queen size bed. Allows you decent coverage. Then dress is up however you like; extra pillows, cushions etc. Target ofter sell decent bed linen, and often have sales.
