Solid Timber Boards

There is a structural and visual difference between solid timber boards & solid engineered timber boards. Solid timber boards will always look incredible.

The density and quality of the timber means they will always feel structurally sound. However, with solid timber comes the natural movement caused by moisture and shrinkage. This is part of the life cycle of solid timber and can be minimised by seasoning (drying) the timber and laying the boards correctly to compensate for shrinkage and possible movement.

Solid Timber Boards

Floating boards are generally constructed using a timber veneer, which is bound to a timber substrate board. Given the thickness of the timber element is much finer than that of solid timber boards, floating flooring is considered to be more sustainable as much less timber is required to achieve a similar look and feel.

Floating boards are popular in many applications, such as new homes (more cost effective than solid boards), units and apartments (for acoustic reasons) and family homes (low maintenance and hard-wearing).

Solid Timber Boards

Solid timber boards are the thickest of the solid floor family and are generally the most expensive of all the options. To install solid timber boards is not only costlier, it is also more time consuming.

The process of installing the boards can take up to a month, from acclimatising the boards, installing, sanding and polishing. There are many beautiful options to chose from and Australia is blessed to have many local varieties of timber which are more than suitable for our homes.

Flooring Material

Other moisture-related problems Cracks and shrinkage can result from too little moisture. Cupping across the width of one piece of the flooring material leaves the edges higher than the center.

It is usually caused by a moisture imbalance through the thickness of the board.Crowning, when the center of the piece of flooring is higher than the edges, caused when a cupped floor is sanded flat without eliminating the cause of the moisture imbalance.

Most Commonly Used Kitchen Cabinet

Material Used for Kitchen Cabinet Body Dictates the Quality! You might hear interior designers encourage you to go for timber as they are more versatile and cheaper.

Uncontroversial, timber is versatile when comes to designs and they are the cheapest among other materials. The main reason they are able to be relatively competitive in price is due to the quality of the timber being used. Timber comes in many forms, and the most commonly used for kitchen cabinet and furniture fabrication is “chipboard”.

Compared Solid Wood

Another major advantage compared to solid wood is that it mimics the look-and-feel of natural timber but comes at a fraction of the price. The installation of laminated flooring also takes much lesser time, less of a hassle and does not require superior (and often costly) workmanship.
