Engineered Wood Floors
Melbourne Laminate Flooring vs Engineered Flooring. Engineered wood floors are made from a thin layer of hardwood, which is then backed with several layers of softwood or plywood. The multiple supporting layers are hidden and give the boards support and strength, whilst the surface you walk on is pure, unadulterated solid wood. This means that engineered floors look, feel and sound just like solid wood floors, but are a lot more versatile.

Two Basic Types

Two Basic Types
Hardwood flooring comes in two basic types: solid wood planks or engineered planks. Engineered hardwood floors, sometimes called laminate hardwood floors, are manufactured by laminating several individual layers together, but it's still considered a hardwood floor because the surface layer is a thin slice of real hardwood veneer. The difference is that the visible textured layer is not real wood, but a high quality image of wood, or other natural texture, that is stuck on to the substrate or underlying core layer.

Real Wood Floors

Real Wood Floors
Most laminate and real wood floors are laid by dry-clipping boards together. Clipping mechanisms vary, but the principles are the same. Whether you need a vapor barrier or underlay will depend on the type of floor. If in doubt, install one. Where possible, lay flooring before installing baseboards or door casings so that they can cover the expansion gap. Wooden flooring needs to acclimatize for two or three days before being laid. Open packs and lay out the boards. Some flooring will need to be oiled after installation.
